Bishops gathered in Vatican City to discuss the “positive aspects of civil unions and cohabitation” and other matters involving the modern family. The meeting was called by Pope Francis and signals the more tolerant direction he has chosen to take the church. The bishops said, “The Church turns respectfully to those who participate in her life in an incomplete and imperfect way, appreciating the positive values they contain rather than their limitations and shortcoming.” The meeting indicates a possible easing of the church’s outlook on homosexuality and divorce. The church is urging its’ congregation to be more tolerant and to look for the good in people rather than discriminate against them. The bishops will issue a final document next week, and I look forward to hearing what they will say.
