“Love locks” have gained notoriety worldwide as symbols of love and romance. The Pont des Arts in Paris, has become famous because of its adornment with thousands of these locks. “Love locks” are padlocks that couples attach to bridges and public fixtures to declare their love for one another. The padlocks often have names and engravings on them. This ritual, which began in Hungary during the 19th century, began gaining popularity and spread to cities all over the world in the early 2000s. The tradition took hold of Paris in 2008 starting on the Pont des Arts and has since extended to the Pont de l’Archevêché and the Passerelle Simone de Beauvoir. Couples attach their locks to these Parisian bridges, and then throw the key into the Seine River. While visiting Paris, I snapped this photo of a couple meeting on the Pont des Arts. I believe that it captures the romance and timelessness of this beautiful tradition and place.
